How much it will cost me? or how we save money…
Each provider has its own pricing scheme and the charges are really differ. The task that most probably will affect your cloud operational costs is the selection of the cloud provider according to the business you do!
Cloudsigma Charges
SAP Cloud Charges
Microsoft Azure Cloud Charges
AwardSpace Charges
So, for example the charges applied from one provider to the same service may be really high compared to another provider while for some other service is vice versa!
But this is not the only difference: if you actually migrate some of your operations to Open Source tools you practically will not pay the cost of the licensing.
Example: the expensive Database server that runs on a bare metal service can be migrated to an Open Source based database server that is offered as a service from a cloud provider.
Do the mathsBare metal server, Licensed DB | Virtual Server, Open Source DB |
---|---|
Avg Server Acquisition Cost 2000 $ Avg Disk Acquisition Cost 1000 $ Avg DB Server License Cost 500 $ Avg Power/year 7,446 kWh is 731 $ * ---------------------------------- total 3231 $ |
Medium-1 by Cloudsigma 2GB RAM, 50 GB Disk, 5TB/m costs 34$ / 30 days, or about a total 408$ /year |
Think also, that you can stop anytime the contract with your cloud provider without having a penalty.
And of course, you just don’t care about the server! The Cloud Provider will cater most of its needs, assured by a Service Level Agreement / SLA the Cloud Provider is offering. That means no extra working hours from your side in order to debug or maintain the server to the operating system level. You just have to update patches and your applications needs, for example backup and disk clean.
Just to give you an idea:
This website is fully virtual hosted by a provider that does not applies charges for small sites.
This website uses only open source tools: WordPress, MySQL and PHP so no licenses are paid.
Even more, all the tools used for the construction of it are Open Source, for example to write the texts we use Open Office, to produce the illustrations we rely on Gimp, so we do not pay any licenses at all. Overall cost is only the domain name and our working hour.
Hosting: 0 $ Licenses: 0 $ Domain name: 10 $ for two years + ------------------ Total: 10 $
